Direct vs. Indirect costs- Financial Aid

What does direct and indirect costs mean?

Direct costs and indirect costs are terms colleges and universities use to describe the costs associated with attending college.

Direct costs typically include tuition and fees, books and supplies, and room and board. In other words, the major expenses all students incur when attending college. Indirect costs typically include personal costs (such as laundry, purchasing clothing, personal hygiene supplies, etc.), transportation (not including car payments), and any other miscellaneous expenses related to attending college.

The U.S. Department of Education allows colleges and universities to use both direct and indirect costs when determining their students' estimated cost of attendance budget. Cost of attendance can be used as one of the determining factors when students are deciding which college or university to attend. Learn more about BMCC's Cost of Attendance.
