Financial Aid Professional Judgement and Special Circumstances

How to submit a Special Circumstance

Professional Judgment refers to the discretion given to Financial Aid administrators to adjust certain FAFSA data elements in the event of a student’s unusual or special circumstance. These modifications are meant to provide a more accurate assessment of a student’s family’s ability to contribute to the cost of education. This is done on a case-by-case basis, utilizing proper documentation provided by the student. Students may make virtual appointments to speak to a Financial Aid counselor regarding a Dependency Override, an Income Adjustment, or a Cost of Attendance (COA) Adjustment.

Further information about these special circumstances, and the means of setting up appointments, are available via the Professional Judgment and Special Circumstances page of BMCC Financial Aid website, here.
