New York State Opportunity Promise (NYSOP) - Free Community College
What is the New York State Opportunity Promise?
New York State Opportunity Promise (NYSOP) – Free Community College
New York State Governor Hochul's Opportunity Promise proposal represents a transformative investment in New York's future. Imagine earning your college degree without the stress of tuition costs. By removing financial barriers to education, we unlock the full potential of New York’s students — dramatically increasing degree completion, expanding access to economic opportunity, and driving upward mobility.
The Governor’s bold proposal to make community college degrees free isn’t just an investment in individuals, it’s a strategic move to strengthen our workforce, fuel regional economic growth, and secure a more prosperous future for all New Yorkers. This proposal would fully cover tuition, fees, and even the cost of books and supplies for adult learners who haven’t yet earned a degree — making it possible to pursue an associate degree in high-demand fields like Nursing, Teaching, Technology, and Engineering.
