Modern Language courses
I am looking to take a language course. Is there a placement exam?
Students with little knowledge of the language or who have studied the language in school, or might have learned it elsewhere, but do not speak the language like heritage or native or speakers:
- Take the Modern Languages Level Assessment at the BMCC Portal.
- The results will be emailed to you to the email you use to register at the time of taking the online level assessment.
Students who already speak the language – fluently or somewhat fluently:
- Do not take the online assessment.
- Instead, write a paragraph in the language you wish to take a course in where you provide your name and the following information (real or imaginary):
- Your experience with the language
- Why you want to study this language
- Your plans for the future
- A good memory from your childhood
- Note: Do not use Google translate or ask for help writing this paragraph or you may be placed in the wrong level and then, asked to change your entire schedule if you need to move to a higher or lower level.
- Where to send paragraph: Paragraph is to be sent to the emails listed below depending on the language. Students should make sure to include on the paragraph: name, email where results should be sent to, and CUNY 1ST I.D.:
- Chinese, French, Italian, and Spanish – send paragraph to rzelaya@bmcc.cuny.edu.
- Arabic – send paragraph to msofaini@bmcc.cuny.edu.
- American Sign Language (ASL) – Do not write a paragraph. Instead, contact Edward Nevarez at enevarez@bmcc.cuny.edu.
